Missed it by that much

Okay, maybe it wasn't that close, but I tried my best to take everyone's money. Here's how it went: Mark Lowrey tried to take the pot with 3 pairs...but just ended up taking David's spot as the first spectator. Marc Dunn went all in and then went all out and never missed a chance to work the Brokeback Mtn jokes. Next out was the Lawyer and his methodical way of playing poker. Little "tah tah" couldn't conjure up the cards and seemed poised to fall asleep at any moment. Dude, drink some coffee. Bernie "Biff" Gagain stayed in the game a long time while getting numerous hands of 5 and 3. Tyler wouldn't shut up about the hand he just folded or the hand that got away and Jeff just took all our chips and money. Folks, it was a good time and Jeff has showed he is definately the guy to beat. I believe that's 4 wins for the Wickham and 1 each for Marc and Tyler.

PN1 Night has been set

It appears that we will be meeting for another night of poker this Thursday at Jeff's house. (See link to directions on the side column). We will try starting at 7:10pm sharp, so plan on getting there around 6:30 to shovel in some pizza. Jeff, can you order the pizza and I'll pay you when I get there?

Oh, I bought some turtlewax products and they gave me some free playing cards. That's about all I'm willing to spend on a new deck. After all, the old deck did well for me last time. See you there.

Best five hand - Split pot

I've done a little research and have verified that Jeff is correct on the interpretation of the best "5 hand" rule. The link here can provide some help and following is the most important part:

Board (after three rounds)
8♠ Q♣ 8♥ 4♣

Alice10♣ 9♣
BobK♥ Q♠
CarolQ♥ 10♦
DavidJ♣ 2♣

At the moment, Bob is in the lead with a hand of Q♠ Q♣ 8♠ 8♥ K♥, making two pair, Qs and 8s, with a K kicker. This just beats Carol's hand of Q♥ Q♣ 8♠ 8♥ 10♦ by virtue of his kicker. Both Alice and David are hoping the final card is a club, which will make them both a flush, but David would have the higher flush and win if that happens. For example, if the final card was the 7♣, David's flush would be Q-J-7-4-2, while Alice's would be Q-10-9-7-4. Alice could still win, though, if the final card were the J♦, as that would give her a Q-high straight. On this deal, however, the final card was the A♠, which didn't help either of them. Bob and Carol still each have two pair, but notice what happened: both of them are now entitled to play the final A as their fifth card, making their hands both two pair, Qs and 8s, with an A kicker. Bob's K no longer plays, because the A on the board plays as the fifth card in both hands, and they can't play six cards. They therefore split the pot.
